Is Embalming Required?
NO, there is no state or province of the United States that requires embalming, although it may be required if the remains are to be viewed at the funeral home, or if it could create a public health hazard.
Is a Casket Required By Law?
NO, there is no law in New York State or any province of the United States that requires you to purchase a casket. A container will be required if the remains are to be transported a long distance. Also, some type of container is necessary for final disposition. We believe that the decision can only be made by the family; and the funeral director should not interfere with the family's wishes in any way.
Is an Outer Recepticle or Vault Required?
NO. There are no laws at this time that require the use of an outer recepticle or vault to place the casket in. However, most cemeteries require that an outer recepticle be used. This can be a graveliner made of concrete, which provides support for the earth above the casket, or a sealed vault made of concrete, steel, and lined with strentex, marble or stainless stell, or copper and bronze. Some cemeteries do require the use of a sealed vault. Al the cemetaries in the Elmira-Horseheads-Pine City area require the use of at least a graveliner. The only cemetery in our area that does not require the use of an outer recepticle, to our knowledge, is Woodlawn National Cemetery. They do however, at this time, provide a graveliner free of charge to any honorably discharged veteran and his or her spouse and dependent children.
What Does a Funeral Cost?
A general price list is available and may be picked up at our funeral home. In general, a traditional funeral will cost between $3500 and $7000. It can be done for less or more, depending on the decisions made by the family or person in charge of making the arrangements.
What Do Caskets Cost?
A complete casket price list is available at our funeral home. In general, caskets range in price from $575 to $4000 or more. Caskets are made from different materials, from 20 gauge steel, to copper, bronze and stainless steel. Or from hardwood to oak mahogony and cherry. The decision is totally up to the family or the person in charge of making the arrangements. We will never interfere in the family's decision as to the type of casket to use.
What Do I Need To Bring To The Funeral Home? Biographical information to be used for the death certificate and obituary. Social security information, VA discharge papers if the deceased was a veteran. Any insurance policies with which the funeral home can assist the family. A recent photograph for possible use with the obituary and to assist the funeral home staff prepare for the services. Clothes, jewelry and other personal items for use during visitation, funeral service, burial or cremation.
