Alice Rita Hanigan

(Alice) Rita Hanigan, age 100, passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility with her daughter at her side. She was born on November 25, 1914, the daughter of the late Joseph and Alice (Nolan) Votrey. (Alice) Rita was predeceased by her husband, Fletcher Hanigan; daughter, Marie Patterson; and sister, Gladys Bannon. Surviving are her daughters, Joan (Raymond) Case of Waverly, NY and Eileen (Pasquale) Pizza of Dover, PA; grandchildren, Elaine Badr, Mark Dewey, Linda Limoncelli, JoAnn Valerius, Christine Gozza, Gina Meyer, Sheila Burns, Michelle Garcia, Steven Case, Jeff Barrett, and Bernard Barrett. In addition, she is survived by twenty great grandchildren; nieces, Alice (James) Sowers, Mary (Merle) Baylor and nephew, Richard (Gladys) Bannon. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from St. Luke's Hospital in Newburgh, NY. She worked in NYC Hospitals as an Evening Supervisor, and later moved to Elmira, NY where she met and married Fletcher Hanigan. She continued her work in her profession at both Arnot-Ogden and St. Joseph's hospitals until retirement.She will be remembered, by all, for her strong will, determination and feisty nature. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, NY on Sunday, October 25, 2015 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A prayer service will be held there at 1:15 PM on Monday, October 25, 2015 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at The Blessed Sacrament Church (St. Patrick's), 604 Park Place, Elmira, NY at 2:00 PM. Graveside services will follow at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. Reverend Rick Farrell will officiate. In lieu of flowers please make memorial donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
