Age 86, of North Chemung, NY, died Monday morning, February 22, 2010 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility in Elmira after an illness. Born Annette Clara Hicks in Asheville, North Carolina February 2, 1924, Mrs. Courtright moved to the Elmira area with her family while a teenager and graduated from Breesport High School. During World War II, she worked at Bendix Corporation and married Tracey Laverne Courtright after the war on February 16, 1946, moving to nearby North Chemung and living on the Courtright family farm for nearly 60 years. A beautician, she ran Annette's Beauty Shop and later worked as a unit clerk at St. Joseph's Hospital Emergency Room. She also served as an election inspector for the town of Baldwin. Mrs. Courtright had a deep and unflagging love for her husband Tracey, who died November 25, 2007 and for her family and many friends throughout the Elmira area. She loved her children, their spouses and grandchildren, and enjoyed traveling frequently to visit family members around the country. She enjoyed collecting during her travels, which took her as far as Hawaii, acquiring things as whimsical as canes and matchbooks or as significant as a display case packed full of small porcelain objects gathered over the years. She had a warm, social presence which made her a sought after conversationalist and encouraged a near life-long association with the Order of the Eastern Star and with the North Chemung United Methodist Church. She had an effortless ability to turn acquaintances into friends from an early age, and her gift of friendship continued to flourish when she moved to Appleridge at Bethany Village in Horseheads and finally to the Chemung Country Nursing Facility. Mrs. Courtright is survived by siblings, John Hicks, Carolyn Haller, and Cynthia Luce; four children and their spouses: Kathleen Yorkis (Paul), Anson Courtright (Mary Beth), Suzanne Woodruff (Jay), and Hans Courtright (Mary); nine grandchildren: Maria Charnigo (Brian), Jacob Yorkis (Carrie), Laura Mullen (Ron), Katie and Sarah Woodruff, Megan and Julie Courtright, Aidan and Michael Courtright; great grandchildren Claire and Owen Mullen; nephew Douglas Courtright; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family.
