Age 84 passed away Thursday, September 25, 2003 in St. Joseph?s Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit, Elmira, where he moved 2 months ago, after living at Bethany Courtyard for the last four years.He was born September 6, 1919 in Elmira, NY to the late Clarence and Evvaleanna Houghton Brown.Bernard lived his entire life in Elmira, and even though he enjoyed traveling, he never wanted to get too far away from home. A US Army veteran, he proudly served his country in World War II as an airplane mechanic.He was married to Elizabeth Mae Brown, who died July 17, 1999, for over 60 years.During his lifetime, Bernard worked for National Homes, Kennedy Valve, and Howell Packaging.An avid connoisseur of bingo and crossword puzzles, Bernard loved watching Yankee and Braves baseball games on television.His three brothers, George, Lester, and Clarence Brown, and one sister, Virginia, predeceased him.He is survived by his daughter, Charlene Beth Brown Sales and son-in-law, Tom Sales of Cleveland, OH; three grandchildren, Tim Sales and David Sales of Cleveland, OH, and Brett Sales of Los Angeles, CA; a sister, Shirley Doyle of Massilion, OH; and many nieces and nephews.Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, NY 14904 on Sunday, September28, 2003 from 2 to 3 PM, with funeral services immediately following at 3 PM.Chaplain Mary Ann Klee from St. Joseph?s Hospital will officiate.Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira at the convenience of the family.A ?Candle of Remembrance? may be left for the family at www.olthof.com.
