Wholeben, Bernard E. “Bernie” age 93 of Elmira, NY passed away Tuesday, July 17th, 2012 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. He was born in Olean, NY on the 26thday of November in 1918. The son of the late Frederick and Anna (Carls) Wholeben. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by his loving wife Genevieve (Dobek) Wholeben in 2011 and his first wife Mildred (Camp) Wholeben in 1956. Surviving Bernie are his children: Son and daughter in law: Brent (Belinda) Wholeben of Rockford, ILDaughter Michelle (Joseph) Dyl of Amherst, NY ; Son: Paul Wholeben of Elmira; Son : Keith Wholeben of Erin, NY; Daughter and son in law: Denise (Gary) Goodier of Campbell, NY; Daughter: Nadine Wholeben with (Michael Muccigrosso) of Millport, NY;8 grandchildren: Mellissa, Kevin, Timothy, Kathryn , Joseph,Dennis, Tabitha, Shaun and one Great Grandchild Jonathan along with his loving canine companions “Bob” and “Kia”. Bernie is also predeceased by his grandson Jason Wholeben; Brother: Norbert Wholeben. Bernie was a communicant of St. Peter and Paul’s Church. He retired from Thatcher Glass as foreman after nearly 40 years of service. He was proud to be a United States Army Air Corp veteran of World War II with rank of 1st Lt., and served as a navigator and bombardier in the 8th Bomb Group in Europe. He was shot down over Germany and served as a P.O.W. until liberated. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the St. Peter and Paul’s Church, 1 St. Joseph Blvd. ,Elmira, NY 14901 Friday, July 20th, 2012 at 10:00AM with graveside services following at the St. Peter and Paul’s Cemetery, with Military Honors accorded.Flower donations are gratefully declined.
