Age 71 of Gary Dr. Horseheads, New York. Passed away peacefully at her home that she loved. Friday, February 16, 2007 after a long and dignified battle with cancer. She was born on January 11th, 1935 in Parker, Pa to the late Howard and Bessie Wilkenson Lesser. A brother and sister predecease her.Betty is survived by her beloved dogs KIKI and PURDY and most recently predeceased by LADDIE along with several other beloved pets. She is also survived by her very dear friend Linda Olthof who cared for her day and night until her passing; Bettys adopted family also survives her Alice Carr, Kathy Carleton and her daughters Whitney and Rachel who only knew Betty as Gramma Betty, Curtis and Molly Bailey, Ken and Roxanne Bailey and their sons, John, Ethan, and Jimmy. Her nieces and nephew survive her. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, NY 14904 Sunday, February 18th, 2007 from 3:00PM to 5:00PM. A celebration of Bettys life will be held following the calling hours at 5:00PM.Interment will be held at a time convenient with the family in the Parker Memorial Cemetery, Parker, Pennsylvania. Betty was well educated, graduated and attended many Universities including Clarion, Duke, Cornell, Syracuse, Duquesne Universities, and Corning Community College. She was a dedicated teacher for 44 years in the Elmira City School District. She was proud to be a member of Whos Who in American Teachers. Betty also enjoyed retail, working for Bradlees for 20 years, and most recently BonTon as a customer service agent. She was very active in the community and served as a coordinator in the Riverfront Project, and assisted her Riverside Elementary class in obtaining playground equipment for Brand Park. Those who knew Betty the closest, knew she loved her pets, home and watching the wildlife around it, the outdoors, traveling, SCUBA diving with the manatees, and kayaking in Seneca Lake. A very special Thank You to the numerous friends of Bettys for helping to take care of her or visiting her, including Alice and Francis Seymour, Gary and Sherri Myers, Marilyn Burton, and the staff of the Southern Tier Hospice that she became very close to.
