Age 76, of Pine City, NY, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2009, at home surrounded by his family. Born October 15, 1932, in Boston, MA; he was the son of the late Bruce E. Stewart and Dorothy (Leighton) Stewart. He graduated from Northeastern University with an Ed. M in Education and was a classroom Teacher in Keene, NH; a High School Principal in Hinsdale, NH and Montpelier, VT; Associate Dean of Admissions and Director of Admissions at Norwich University in Northfield, VT: and Associate Dean of Admissions at Elmira College from 1990-2005, also serving as ROTC Coordinator between Elmira College and Cornell University. He was the first recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award in Higher Education in New York State and was a member of the National Association of College Admission Counselors. He received Officers commission in the U.S. Army, serving in both active and reserve duty: honorably discharged in 1965 with the rank of Captain in the Signal Corps. He served in several capacities with the Vermont Affiliate of the American Heart Association and as President of the County Division, Vermont Affiliate, from 1988-1990. He was a member of the Montpelier Lodge of Elks and the Montpelier Rotary Club. As well, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Keene, NH and of the Scottish American Society of the Southern Tier. He is predeceased by his brother, Donald Stewart, and is survived by his wife Barbara and three children: Deborah (Michael) Strong, Donald (Rose) Stewart: Douglas ( Joanne) Stewart and five grandchildren. He is remembered for his devotion to family and students with whom he worked diligently to assist in reaching their educational goals. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, September 1 , from 4:00pm - 7:00pm at Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue in Elmira, NY. A service of remembrance will be held on Wednesday. September 2, at 11:00 am at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 304 North Main St. in Elmira, NY, with a reception to follow. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Keene, NH. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice, The American Heart Association or a charity of one's choice.
