Catherine C. Thorn

Age 93, of Elmira, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at home.Catherine Jeanette Childs was born in Elkland, PA on December 9, 1920.She was predeceased by her mother, Mary Williams Childs and father, James A. Childs, Sr. of Elmira; brother, James Childs Jr. of Detroit, MI; brother, Albert Childs of Elmira; sister, Ruth (Booker) Williams of Detroit, MI; brother, Thomas (Elizabeth) Childs of Washington, DC; and husband, Lee E. Thorn of Elmira.Catherine is survived by her sister, Mary (Herbert) Mathis of Painted Post, NY; brother, Richard (Rosa) Childs of Scotch Plains, NJ; brother, Robert (Marlene) Childs of Piscataway, NJ; and son, Robert E. Thorn of Elmira. In 1943, Catherine and Lee Thorn were married in Elmira, and their marriage endured for 61 years until Mr. Thorn’s death.Catherine lived in Elkland, PA; Savona, NY; and Elmira, NY.She was employed as a factory worker with the Westinghouse Electric Corp. in Bath, NY and the Electri-Cord Manufacturing Co. in Westfield, PA.Catherine retired from the Elmira City School District where she was the Head Cook at Elmira Free Academy.She was most recently a member of the Horseheads Church of Christ. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service celebrating her life on Saturday, February 8, 2014 in the Horseheads Church of Christ 165 Miller Street Horseheads, NY at 11:00 AM.
