Age 79, of Big Flats NY, died Friday March 14th on his 79th birthday peacefully surrounded by his children and loved ones. The family wishes to express our deep thanks to the staff and caregivers at Bethany for their compassion and his excellent care.He was preceded in death by his wife Eileen, parents Charles & Pauline and sister Kathleen Hamilton, parents in-law Walter (Margaret) Stein, brother in-law Lawrence Stein, sister in-law Kathleen Stein and nephew James Stein.He is survived by his sons Michael (James DeRoo) Plano TX, Joseph (Heather) Big Flats NY, daughter Lisa (John) Stempin, Horseheads NY and grandson Jacob Agan Big Flats NY.Sisters and brothers, Elizabeth (Michael) Horn, Potomac MD, Delores (Ronald) McClellan, Sarasota FL, Paul (Carolyn) Agan, Port Orange FL, Maureen (Stephan) Kay, Gilbert AZ, and Michael (Julie) Agan, Mandeville LA.Brother and sister in-laws Thomas Hamilton, Elmira NY, Walter (Carol) Stein, Big Flats NY, John (Esperanza) Stein, Elmira NY, Thomas (Sue) Stein, Elmira NY, James Stein, Horseheads NY, Robert (Kathy) Stein, Elmira NY, Elizabeth and Margie Stein, Horseheads NY and numerous nieces and nephews.He was an avid sportsman who loved hunting, fishing, boating and camping. He enjoyed travel, golf, bowling, euchre and pinochle.He retired from the Elmira Correctional Facility in 1996 with 37 years of service as a Corrections Officer where he received several commendations of exemplary service.He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1957 as a Supply Records Specialist where he received an Honorable discharge and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, United Service Medal and Korean Service Medal. He was a graduate of Southside High School Class of 1953.Visitation hours will be held on Thursday March 20th from 1:00PM to 3:00PM and from 6:00PM to 8:00PM at Olthof Funeral Home, 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira NY 14904.A Christian Mass and Funeral will be celebrated on Friday March 21st 10:00AM at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 556 St. Joseph’s Boulevard, Elmira NY, immediately followed by a Christian Burial in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery with family and friends gathering afterward for a reception with food and beverage to be announced.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to “Elmira Blessed Sacrament, Homebound Ministries”, 1010 Davis St. Elmira NY 14901 or to the “Friends of the Chemung River Watershed”, 111 N.
