SHERWOOD Sr., Charles D. Mr. Charles Deforest Sherwood Sr., son of the late Glen and Mary E. (Payne) Sherwood passed away surrounded by his family on August 6, 2016 at the age of 85. A life-long Elmira resident, he was married to Margaret Mitchell Sherwood for 27 years prior to her death. He is survived by his, brother, Glen of Syracuse, NY; sons, Christopher of Milton, MA; Timothy (JoAnn) of Elmira, NY; daughters, Susan (John) Sherwood Pate of Ormond Beach, FL; Margaret of Simsbury, CT; 5 grandchildren: Kathleen, Katherine, Kimberly, Alexander and Charles III. “Good ole Charlie” retired in 1993 after working for 41 years at Hardinge Brothers Inc. He began as a draftsman and became a mechanical engineer who was awarded two patents.He was an expert wood worker, having built the family home, and made many custom pieces of furniture for family and friends. He was an avid golfer and played every week during the season for 55 years. He also enjoyed bowling, reading history, sport biographies, camping, NASCAR, landscaping, antiquing, and was a skilled Free Cell player. He loved hosting his visiting children and grandchildren. He was known for that “Sherwood wit” –his spontaneous sense of humor that was entertaining and fun. The family would like to express their gratitude for the exemplary and unwavering care and support provided by Ann Roberts and Dr. Kimberly Kaffenbarger, as well as the professionals at CareFirst and Stafkings. Family and friends are invited to attend Graveside Services for Charles on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Fitzsimmons Cemetery atCedar St. and Maple Avenue. His son, Rev.
