Age 82, went peacefully home to be with his Lord, on Sunday, January 9, 2005 at the Elcor Health Services, Horseheads, NY where he has resided for the past few years. He was born December 31, 1922 in Catlin, NY, the son of the late George and Mary (White) Canfield. Clair married Virginia G. (Koen) on January 21, 1945 in South Carolina. They celebrated 57 wonderful years of life and love together prior to her death September 10, 2002. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Cecil, Denzel, Raymond and Earl Canfield; sister, Ardis DePue; beloved grandson, Andrew Canfield. His survivors include: sons, Terry K. (Pon) Canfield of Horseheads, NY; Dean Canfield of Avoca, NY; Brian (Janet) Canfield of Elmira, NY; daughters, Celeste and Amber Canfield, both of Elmira, NY; brother, Leland (Mickey) Canfield of Floral City, FL; Albert Canfield of Corning, NY; sister, Emma Wilson of Corning, NY; along with loving grandchildren, George (Jessica) Canfield of Horseheads, NY; Julie Canfield of Horseheads, NY; Mathew Canfield, stationed in Germany with the US Army; Celeste Canfield, Abraham Canfield and Amber Canfield all of Elmira, NY; great grandsons, Nathaniel Canfield and Arron Canfield of Horseheads, NY; along with several nieces and nephews. Clair was a Veteran of the US Army and proudly served his country from 1943 to 1946 during WW II. He retired from Corning, Inc. as a carpenter after several years of dedicated service. Clair was a member of the Masonic Lodge # 378 and a member of the Ernest Skinner Memorial American Legion Post # 1612 both of Big Flats, NY. He also was a former Fire Police with the Southport Volunteer Fire Department for many years. ?Brother Canfield?, as his church family affectionately knew him, was a faithful member of the Elmira Christian Center and served as a Sunday School Teacher, Bus Worker, and Usher/Greeter. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira on Wednesday, January 12, 2005 from 5 to 7 PM. Funeral Services celebrating Clair?s life will be held on Thursday, January 13, 2005 at the Elmira Christian Center, 235 East Miller Street, Elmira, NY at 1:00 PM. The Reverend Belvy White will officiate. Interment will follow in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park where the Chemung Veterans Honor Squad will accord Mr. Canfield full Military Honors. Because of Clair?s love and generous support for the Elmira Christian Academy through the years, memorial donations may be directed to the school. Envelopes will be provided by the funeral home.
