David A. Sherman, born on December 28, 1947 in Elmira, NY, leaves a legacy of love and dedication to his family and the local community. He impacted many lives through his unwavering commitment to helping children gain confidence in their abilities and their importance in the world. Dave died unexpectedly on August 22, 2023, at the age of 75, in the loving company of his family.

Throughout his 32-year career as an educator, Dave instilled in his students the values of hard work, determination, kindness, and the importance of finding joy in the things they choose to do. Sports played a central role throughout his life, and as a former wrestler was inducted into the Chemung County Sports Hall of Fame. Dave coached multiple sports over his career, touching the lives of numerous young athletes and inspiring them to achieve their full potential. For 35 years, Dave coached gymnastics and was owner of the Elmira Gymnastics Club, where his dedication to nurturing talent and fostering a spirit of excellence left an indelible mark on the gymnastics community.

During the past 37 summers, Dave served as the director of Camp Iroquois at Keuka Lake, home of the New York State Sheriffs' Institute Summer Camp. His tenure showcased his dedication to creating a positive and impactful experience for the campers. His legacy will forever be woven into the fabric of the camp, enriching the lives of countless children.

Dave is survived by his wife, Laurie; his children, Michael, Steven, and Laura; four granddaughters, Zoe, Olivia, Addison, and Elise; three brothers, Larry, Dan, and Scott; and a large, loving family. His life was a testament to his commitment to family, as well as generations of former students, gymnasts, camp counselors, and campers. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Loring and Gloria, his sister Gail, his daughter-in-law Rachel, and his beloved dogs.

Dave Sherman's impact on the lives of those he touched will continue to resonate through the memories of his kindness, dedication, and compassion. His example has inspired younger generations to live with the same spirit of generosity and devotion that defined his remarkable life. May he rest in peace, knowing that his legacy of helping others to bring out the best in themselves will continue to thrive.

The family will welcome visitors on Saturday, August 26, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Olthof Funeral Home, with family service to follow. (Casual attire welcome: attendees are encouraged to wear apparel representing the interests to which Dave dedicated his life: Camp Iroquois, EGC, Elmira schools, etc.) A celebration of life will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the NYSSI Summer Camp at https://sheriffsinstitute.org/camp.
