age 90, of Elmira, passed away on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at home surrounded by his adoring family.He was born in Wilkes-Barre, PAon October 29, 1920, the son of the late Delbert L. and Helen (Knappman) Moss.Delbert married the love of his life Shirley Helm at Centenary United Methodist Church in Elmira on April 26, 1947 and is survived by Shirley, their son Larry Moss and daughter Nanette Moss both of Elmira; sister, Ruth West of Gillett, PA; nieces and nephews, Tamara (Rich) Dean of Ellicottville, NY; Kitty Mooney ofFriendship, NY; Jeffrey (Pok) Lain of Olean, NY; Candace (Ted) Barth of Bolivar, NY; Helen Hoover ofBinghamton, NY; David Gale and special mention ofgreat niece Lindsey Gale and great nephew Daniel Gale of Binghamton, NY; Bobby West of Hedgesville, W. VA; Gary (Wanda) West of Hedgesville, W. VA; Steven (Sharon) West of E. Smithfield, PA; Kim West Clarkson and Richard Day of Germantown, MD; Michael (Jackie) Rinehart of Elmira, NY; Patrick (Cheryl) Rinehart of Elmira, NY;Martin (Linda) Rinehart of Phoenix, AZ; Diana Rinehart of Elmira, NY;Rebecca (Joe) Cleary ofElmira, NY; Gregory (Courtney) Rinehart of Ithaca, NY; Rita (Emil) Krazinsky of Elmira, NY; Jeannie Fitzpatrick of Wisconsin. Special mention of very good friend and neighbor Ellie Hack and family.Delbert is predeceased by his sisters, Evalyn (Robert) Lain and Jean (David) Gale; nieces Wendy Lain, Melody Pettit, Alice McGann and Kathy Cass and nephew Jerome Fitzpatrick, Jr. Delbert joined the Marine Corps in 1942 and was stationed aboard the battleship USS Augusta and was the Captain's orderly.Corporal Moss saw action during the invasion of North Africa at Oran.His ship was active in the invasion of Italy near Naples.Delbert was in a party of men that accepted the surrender of the German forces on the islands in Marseilles, France, harbor.During the invasion of Normandy the USS Augusta was the communications center for the invasion.Delbert saw action at sea and was honored to be the orderly to King George VI of Great Britain while he visited the ship.He was also honored to be the orderly for President Harry Truman, as the President was being taken to the Potsdam Conference at the end of the war. When his service was ended, Delbert returned to Elmira.He met his future wife, Shirley, soon after. They were married April 26, 1947 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Elmira. The couple had been happily married for over 63 years.He was a long time employee of Remington Rand in Elmira as a final adjustor for the Swiss calculator the Precissa.Delbert was laid off from the Rand in the 1970's when the company closed and took what was a hobby, antiques, and made into a business called Del's Antiques, on E. Miller St. in Elmira.He retired in his 60's enjoying his family. Family and friends are invited to call on the Moss family at OlthofFuneral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira/Southport on Saturday, December 11, 2010 from 1:00-3:00 PM.At 3 PMthe Marine Corps League will honor Delbert with military honors and the presentation of United States flag to his beloved Shirley. Rev. Michael Weeden of New Beginnings United Methodist Church will celebrate Delbert's life following military honors.Graveside services will take place on Monday, December 13, 2010 at Woodlawn Cemetery at 11:00 AM with the family meeting at the Walnut Street gate.Memorial donations may be directed to Southern Tier Hospice and Palliative Care, 11751 E.
