Donald W. Bassett

Was born April 16, 1936 in Batavia, NY the son of the late William B. and Hannah (Summers) Bassett passed away peacefully after an extended illness on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center at the age of 77. His son, Donald J. Bassett and grandson, Thomas William Schwab preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Hildegarde; beloved children, Mary Schwab and Suzanne Bassett; adored grandchildren, Michael and Kathryn Bassett; Jamie Nagle and Brook Hanlin; Joseph Schwab and Daniel Schwab; sister, Carin (Roger) Johnson; daughter-in-law, Debbie Bassett; along with 3 great granddaughters, several nieces and nephews. Donald was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corp proudly serving his country. He retired from NYSEG after 34 years of dedicated service. After retiring he worked at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center for 16 years. In the 70's and early 80's, Donald was a paramedic instructor. At his request there will be no prior calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Friday, June 28, 2013 at 9:30 AM at St. Mary Our Mother Church 816 West Broad Street Horseheads, NY. The Reverend Christopher Linsler will celebrate Donald's Mass. Interment will follow in Woodlawn National Cemetery where Mr. Bassett will be accorded Military Honors. The Family will provide their own flowers. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be directed to the Cheumng County Humane Society and SPCA Route # 352 Elmira, NY 14903 in his memory.
