Of Elmira, NY, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 18th, 2005, after an extended and courageous battle with cancer. Doris was born January 16, 1939 to Lawrence and Edna Sheive of Elmira, when a great and passionate life began and flourished for 67 years. Doris was predeceased by her parents, and her mother-in-law and father-in-law, William and Agnes Nelson. Doris is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Bill Nelson. Bill is also her lifelong partner, best friend, and eventual caregiver. She is also survived by her sister, Blanche (Ron) Derr; son, Scott Nelson of Yakima, WA; son, Rhett (Theresa) Nelson of Elmira, NY; granddaughters, Brittany and Melany Nelson of Elmira, NY, Courtney (Kevin) Melone of Yakima WA, and grandson, Seth Hammond of Yakima, WA; one great granddaughter, Alexis Melone of Yakima, WA; and very special friend, Debbie Nelson of Yakima, WA. She is also survived by an aunt and uncle, cousins, nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, and a long list of cherished family friends and coworkers.Doris lived her life with a sincere passion for all she could touch, see, or otherwise experience. She had an unmatched ability to quietly brighten any person, place, or thing. Beyond family and friends, her greatest joys were Keuka Lake, gardening, and travel. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 21st, 2005 at Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira. A Memorial Service to celebrate Doris? life will be conducted at 7:00 PM.In lieu of flowers, please make memorials in Doris?s name to the Falck Cancer Center, c/o the Arnot Ogden Medical Center, 600 Roe Avenue, Elmira, NY 14905 or to the Southern Tier Hospice, 11751 E.
