Age 90, of Elmira, NY passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2009. He was born August 20, 1918 in Hornell, NY to the late George and Ruth (Teeter) Hotter. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Sandra in 1957, sister, Lenora (Harvey) Dunbar and sister-in-law, Geraldine (John) Stowell. He is survived by the love of his life, Dorothy, with whom he celebrated 67 wonderful years of marriage on January 1, 2009; daughter, Joan "Susan" (Greg) Chlan of Roanoke, VA; son, Bruce (Mary Ellen) Hotter of Millerton, PA; also survived by the joys of his life, his grandchildren, Katie (Jeff) VanArnam, Lt. Kevin (Wendy) Chlan, Jeremy (Ann) Sheive, John (Carla) Hotter, Jill (Ed) Ososkie; great grandchildren, Kelly and Kara Sheive, Kaya VanArnam, Micah and Noah Chlan, Colin Ososkie; survivors also include: nieces, Beth and Diane; nephews, Craig and Lee; dear beloved friend and caregiver, Pat Johnson. Dur retired as the Executive Vice-President of Marine Midland Bank and proudly served his country during World War II in the Signal Corps and Air Force during the Aleutian and Pacific Campaigns. He believed strongly in community service, and during his life devoted many hours to a variety of organizations, which enhanced the lives of those living in the Elmira area. Durwood was a 50 + year member of the North Presbyterian Church. Family and friends may call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira/Southport, NY on Friday, January 16, 2009 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. The Chemung County Veterans Honor Squad will accord Mr. Hotter Military Honors at the Funeral Home at 4 PM. Funeral Services honoring his life will follow with the Reverend Donald Rockwell to celebrate Dur's services. Interment will take place in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, NY at the convenience of his family. During the past 20 years, Mr. Hotter faced many serious medical problems. His family would life to thank all those medical personnel at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center, St. Joseph's Hospital and the Chemung County Nursing Facility who administered to him during this time. In particular, we would like to extend a special thanks to all those on floor 3-B at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center who cared for him in his final hours. If everyone could receive such tender and thoughtful care, the world would certainly be a better place. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may remember Dur with memorials in his name to the charity of their choice.
