Age 86 of Spruce Street Elmira, formerly of North Chemung, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility.He was born in Tioga, PA October 2nd, 1924, the son of the late William and Louisa (Jones) Hughes. Surviving Eldon is his loving wife of 34 years, Leona "Maggie" (Foster) Hughes; son: William Hughes of Madison, WI; daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and William Lutz of Elmira, NY; sons, PJ Tuller of Florida, Fred Tuller of Florida; daughter, Shelly (Allan) Watkins of Elmira, NY; sons, David "Guy" Tuller of Elmira, NY; Brian Tuller of Skaneateles, NY; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother, Kenneth Hughes of Elmira; sisters: Glenora Gunderman of Wellsburg, NY; Harriet Elston of North Chemung, NY; Shirley (Gerald) May of North Chemung, NY;Janice (Lemuel) Pipher of Lowman, NY; Phyllis Lowman of Elmira; Beverly (Edgar) Harland of Chapel Hill, NC; Marilyn (Tom) Karski of Elmira; along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Eldon was predeceased by his brother Paul Hughes. He retired from the Town of Baldwin as Highway Superintendent after 30 + years of dedicated service. He was a charter member of the Town of Baldwin Volunteer Fire Department, serving as its first chief. He was a veteran of the US Army with active combat duty during WW II, receiving a purple heart for injuries he received in the Battle of the Buldge. Eldon loved nature, fishing, hunting and took great pride in his garden which he generously shared the bounty with family and friends. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira/Southport, NY on Thursday, June 3, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Funeral services honoring his life will be held there on Friday, June 4, 2010 at 11:00 AM. The Reverend Anne L. Mowrey will celebrate Eldon's Services. Interment will follow in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park where the Chemung County Honor Squad will accord Mr. Hughes military honors. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be directed to the Chemung County Nursing Facility 103 Washington Street Elmira, NY 14901 to the Activities Department for the benefit of the residents.
