Age 88, was born October 19, 1921 in Homewood, PA the daughter of the late Ellis Eberle and Ellyn (Tibbitts) Hewitt. "Betty" was ushered to heaven to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 from St. Joseph's Hospital. Her sister, Mary Kathryn (Hewitt) O'Connor also predeceased her. She is survived by her brother, Joseph Hewitt of Scottsdale, AZ; nephews, Richard O'Connor III, Ellis Eberle O'Connor; niece, Irene Esther (O'Connor) Gallup; along with several great nieces and great nephews. "Betty" was a graduate of the Homewood High School near Pittsburgh, PA. She received her teaching degree from Carnegie Melon University in Pittsburgh, PA and her Master's from Elmira College. "Betty" graduated from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY as an accomplished French Horn player. She traveled all over the United States with an orchestra made up of Eastman Alumni. Prior to moving to the Elmira area, she taught for several years she in New York City at the New York City Christian Academy. "Betty" was a faithful and devoted teacher at the Elmira Christian Academy retiring after 20 plus years of teaching history and typing. She attended the Elmira Christian Center and was a dedicated Sunday School teacher for many years. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira/Southport, NY on Saturday, November 14, 2009 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. Funeral services honoring her life will follow the visitation at 2 PM. Reverend Belvy White will celebrate her services. Interment will take place privately in the Homewood Cemetery Pittsburgh, PA where she will be laid to rest on the Hewitt family plot.
