Age 58, of Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, NY passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 2, 2004.After an extraordinary battle with cancer, Chip went to the Great Creator to join his ancestors.He leaves behind his wonderful daughter, Tammy Cook and a loving companion of many years, Lori Couse.Chip was born in the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation in Silver Creek, NY on June 8, 1945, the son of the late Terry William and Rebecca (Jemison) Nephew, Sr.He was preceded in death by his beloved brother. Terry W. Nephew, Jr.Chip was a long-time member and former commander of the V.F.W.Rex Field Post #901 in Elmira.This battle with cancer was only one of many that Chip fought.He was a veteran of the US Army, serving with the 1/16th of the First Infantry Division in the Vietnam War, where he became a recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds received on October 17, 1967.Chip had been a resident of Elmira for over 40 years and was employed by McMillan-Bloedel Inc. from 1969-1991.He will be remembered as a very generous man whose loyalty and modesty was unprecedented.The family would particularly like to thank Dr. Broketa for his efforts and his sensitivity during the difficult and trying times that Chip and his family had endured over the past 2-½ years.In addition to his daughter and girlfriend, Chip is survived by a son-in-law, Eric Cook of Horseheads, NY; grandson, Loren John; brothers, Dale A. Nephew, Mervyn Nephew, Clayton R. Nephew, and sister, Lucille Nephew.Much of the extended family resides on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation.The family would also like to extend a thank you to Chip?s special friends, Kathy and Tom Decker of Breesport, NY for their strong and loyal friendship of over 40 years.Chip?s loss will be deeply felt.Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, NY on Thursday, March 4, 2004 from 3 to 6 PM.Funeral services will be held there on Friday at 11 AM.Chaplain John Noonan will officiate.Committal services will be held at the Woodlawn National Cemetery, Elmira, NY, immediately following the service, with the Chemung County Veterans Honor Squad according full military honors at the Committal Shelter.Interment will take place at the convenience of the family in the Bath National Cemetery, Bath, NY, where Chip will be laid to rest with his ?boys.?
