age 96 of Elmira, NY, passed away May 2, 2011 at the St. Josephs Hospital. Frances was the daughter of the late Jesse Updike and Gretchen M. (Wingrave) Updike. She was born in Elmira on November 9, 1914, one of ten children, and the second to the last surviving in her family.She is predeceased by her husbands', Norman Smith in 1955 and Glen Daugherty in 1983, siblings: Marleah Louise Metzke, William Updike, Charles Updike, Edward Updike, Robert Updike, Richard Updike, Raymond Updike, and Louis Updike. She is survived by her sister whom she held so close Betty Farley of Lowman, NY and her loving children Louise Edna (Richard) Knapp of Deland, FL and Robert Elliott (Janis) Smith of Pine City, NY; Grandchildren: Beth R. Marczyk and Betsy M.(John) Mattoon; Great grandchildren: Christopher Mattoon and Gabrielle Mattoon; and several nieces, nephews and her dog whom she leaves behind "Jake". Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, NY Thursday, May 5, 2011 from 5:00PM to 7:00PM. Funeral and committal services will be held there at the conclusion of the calling hours at 7:00PM. The Reverend Michael Weeden will officiate. Private graveside services will be held following on Friday morning in the Tioga Point Cemetery. In addition to being a homemaker Frances worked at Westinghouse for a number of years, the Remington Rand and was a beautician out of her own home. She was a past President of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Auxiliary, a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Auxiliary, and American Legion Auxiliary. Frances was known for her love of animals and the care of others. She loved to play shuffleboard, shopping, crocheting, ceramic crafts, sewing and dancing. She loved to hear of all the wonderful accomplishments of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorials in Frances name to the Chemung County SPCA, Rt. 352 Elmira, NY 14905. A very special "Thank You" from the family to the staff of Bethany Courtyards, Bethany Manor, and St. Joseph's Hospital for the heartfelt care and love shown to Frances during her stay with them.
