George J. Barchet

George was born May 28, 1924 in Elmira, the son of the late George H. and Eleanor (Miller) Barchet was placed in God's care on Monday, August 13, 2012 at St. Joseph's Hospital at the age of 88. His brother, Norman Barchet and brother-in-law, Thomas MacBlane predeceased him. He is survived by his loving sisters, Geraldine MacBlane and Genevieve (Francis) Catlin both of Horseheads, NY; beloved nieces and nephews, Lorraine (David) LaDuke of North Syracuse, NY; Ellie (Gary) Manchester of Easton, PA; Debbie Barchet of Coudersport, PA; David MacBlane of Elmira, NY; Gary (Jennie) Barchet of Rochester, NY; Kenneth ( Sharon) Barchet also of Rochester, NY; great nephews, Matthew (Monica) Manchester, Michael Manchester all of Easton, PA; great nieces, Ava and Anna MacBlane of Glenview, Ill; caregivers and friends, Chuck and Kathy Henry with whom he resided; canine friend and companion, "Lilly". George was a Veteran of the US Army proudly serving his country in WW II from 1943 to 1946 and was a life member of the China Burma India Veteran's Association. He was a graduate of Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY and a member of the "Delta Sigma Phi". He was a lifelong member of the First United Church of Christ, taught Sunday School, was on the trustee committee, was an Elder, President and Business Manager. He was the President of the Council of Churches of Chemung County and served on the Conference of the United Church of Christ and was also on the budget and finance committee of its denomination. George was the Treasurer for Family Services of Chemung County (MICA - CV). He was the Vice President of the Chemung Canal Trust Company was a member of the Board of Directors and treasury of New York. He was a life member and advisor on the Board at the Salvation Army and most recently received a plaque honoring 55 years of service. At one time, George was also on the Board of Directors at Woodbrook Assisted Living. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira/Southport, NY on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. George's funeral service celebrating his life and honoring his memory will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2012 in the First United Church of Christ 160 Madison Ave. Elmira NY 14901 at 11:00 AM. Reverend Richard R. Hubbard will officiate. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery where the Chemung County Veteran's Honor Squad will accord Mr. Barchet Military Honors. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be directed to the First United Church of Christ or the Salvation Army 414 Lake Street Elmira, NY 14901.
