Age 79, passed away after a brief but courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, August 23, 2003, at home surrounded by his beloved family. George was born on July 30, 1924 in Elmira, NY the son of Theo C. and Margaret (Sutfin) Sayles. He was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, John F. Sayles and Francis S. Sayles; his sister, Sister Mary Sayles SSJ; and his great-grandson, Parker W. Sayles. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Lucille (Saltus) Sayles, and they celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on February 16, 2003. They were blessed with two children who survive him; James W. (Reggie) Sayles of Horseheads, NY; Susan (Edgar) Torres of Tampa, FL; other survivors include 3 grandchildren; Richard (Sonja) Sayles of N. Charleston, SC; Andrew Sayles of Charlotte, NC; and Jennifer (Edwin) Westfall of Plant City, FL; 4 great grandchildren, Caitlyn, Lindsay, Gage and Gunnar Westfall, all of Plant City, FL; and a sister, Helena (William) Jackson of Vestal, NY; along with many dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. George was a very loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and we loved him dearly. George served his country proudly during WW II in the US Navy aboard the LST-618 and was always proud of having served in the Amphibious Forces. George worked in the Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning business for 40 years and retired from Collins and Walton, Inc. He was a member of the Plumber?s Local 267, RSES, Horseheads Elks Lodge # 2297, American Legion, Sampson WW II Vets, US LST Association, NYS Amphibious Forces Association Inc. and the Southern Tier Chapter of the NYS Amphibious Forces. George was a lifelong member of St. Mary?s Church on Elmira?s Southside. According to George?s wishes, there will be no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, August 27, 2003 at 10:00 AM in St. Mary?s Church. The Reverend Richard Farrell will celebrate the mass. Interment will follow in St. Peter & Paul?s Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined.
