Gladys E. Chaffee

Age 79, formerly of 1216 Sherman Ave. Elmira, NY passed away on Monday, May 5, 2003 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility where she resided. She was born November 27, 1923 in Elmira, the daughter of the late Lee A. and Edith R. (Smith) Layton. Gladys was preceded in death by her loving husband, Louis C. Chaffee in 1992. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Louis and Diane Chaffee of Moneta, VA; grandchildren, Jason (Shana) Chaffee of Newfield, NY; Jennifer (Michael) Henry of Welcome, NC; great grandson, Zackary Chaffee of Newfield, NY; brother, Chester (Delores) Layton of Horseheads, NY; sisters, Betty McNaney of Elmira, NY; Jean Bristow of Elmira Heights, NY; Rita (William) Daily of Connecticut; along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Gladys retired from the A & P as a machinist after 11 years of faithful service. She enjoyed gardening and taking care of her flowers. She loved jewelry, crafts and crafting, playing horseshoes and winning. Her favorite color was purple. Family and friendsare invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira, NY on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 from 1 to 3 PM. Funeral Services will be held there an the conclusion of calling hours. (3 PM) The Reverend Vincent Cooper will officiate. Interment will take place privately in the Woodlawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Memorial Donations may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 1316 College Ave., Elmira, NY14901.
