Age 82, of Elmira, NY passed away peacefully on Wednesday November 11, 2009 at St. Joseph's Hospital surrounded by her loving children. Gloria was born in Brooklyn NY the daughter of the late Frederick and Emily Crankshaw Merkle. She is survived by her children, Charles (Cheryl) Butler, Gloria (Charles) Slater, John (Bonnie) Butler, Laura (David) Noonan, David (Juanita) Butler, Gerald (Charlene) Butler, Edward B. Butler, Carol (Dorsey) Lawson and Fred (Jackee) Butler; also several nieces and nephews. Her husband, Charles W. Butler, Sr, predeceased Gloria. She was often referred to as "The Chief" and dedicated her life to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, always cooking or baking a home made cake for their birthdays and special occasions. Gloria was always there when you needed her; if you were at her home you would never go away hungry. In her younger years she worked as a Telephone Operator in New York City, She retired from the Ann Page Corporation.
