Harold Richard "Doc" Denton Age 74, was born August 25, 1942 in Wayland, NY, the son of the late Gordon and Verna Knickerbocker. He passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at the Bath Veteran's Hospital with his loving wife by his side. Harold is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Mary (Cox) Denton; brother, Len (Vickie) Knickerbocker of Nelson, PA; sister, Victoria (Joel) Cumberledge of Knoxville, PA; sister-in-law, Trudie (Bob) DeSanto of Fountain Hills, AZ; sister-in-law, Judy (Jarrett) Lawson of Russellville, TN; nieces and nephews: Traci (Bruce) Allen, Kimberly (Rodney) Gilbert, Ward (Kelly) Knickerbocker, Inis (Put) Courtney, Lisa DeSanto and Jeff (Ellie) DeSanto; along with 10 great nieces and nephews, whom he adored. Harold was a big family man. He enjoyed every family function and sometimes drove hours to make sure he never missed a birthday, wedding or graduation; and it didn't matter as he was always the first one there. He was a 20 year US Army Veteranwith 2 tours in Vietnam, 12 of those years were spent as a Green Beret, then his last 8 years were as an Army Recruiter. After his retirement from service he worked as a corrections officer at the Elmira Correctional Facility for 20 years. He was an active member of the following groups: past master of the F & AM # 95 Elmira Lodge; member of the Elmira Holly Rebekah Lodge # 249 in Elmira Heights; member of the Corning Odd Fellow # 90 Lodge; member of the Patriot Militen; grand treasurer of the Grand Encampment; and member of the American Legion Bentley - Trumble Post # 442 Horseheads. Harold was a member of the Riverside United Methodist Church in Elmira. For many years he was an avid bowler and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira/Southport, NY on Sunday, April 9, 2017 from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. A Memorial Service celebrating his life will follow the visitation at 2 pm. Reverend Patrick Holder will officiate. Interment will take place in the Woodlawn National Cemetery on Monday, April 10, 2017 at 11 am, where the Chemung County Veteran's Honor Squad will accord Mr. Denton with Military Honors.
