Mapes, Harold C., age 95 of Elmira, NY, passed away Sunday, May 13th, 2012, at the Arnot Ogden MedicalCenter. He was born here in Elmira on October 12th, 1916. The son of the late Charles Leon and Carrie M. (Burbage) Mapes. Surviving Harold are his loving daughters and sons in law: Carolyn (Phillip Barton) Mapes of Corning, NY, Janice (James) Stafford of Dansville, NY, and Son: Harold Mapes Jr. (Patty Allen) of Queensbury, NY; grandchildren, Michael (Joanna) Mallory, J.C. Mallory, Jillian Stafford, Megan (Kevin) Dengel, Kirsten (Devin) DeWitt, Melissa Mapes, Jonathan Mapes, Emily Mapes , Zachary Mapes, Alicia Flewelling and 5 great grandchildren;Numerous nieces and nephews and close friend James Mallory of Horseheads, NY. Harold is predeceased by his wife of 61 years Jane P. Mapes in 2001. Harold was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the counter intelligence corps. He was an active member of the A.C.I.C.V. He retired from Trayer Products after 43 years. Was a member of the American Legion, loved to play golf and took great pride in hand crafting bamboo fly rods. He was a very loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and wonderful friend. Memorial services celebrating Harold’s life will be held following the calling hours at 12:00PM. Military Honors will follow in the Woodlawn National Cemetery to honor Harold’s personal sacrifices defending our freedoms around the world.
