Stage, Howard E., 87, died Friday, October 13, 2006 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility. Howard was born February 17, 1919 in Elmira, New York, the son of the late Leigh and Fannie ( Barnes) Stage. Besides his parents he was also predeceased by his wife of over fifty years, Emma R. Stage who died September 30, 1994 and one brother and two sisters.He is survived by children, Sally (Richard) Lincoln of Pine City, New York, Howard ( Elizabeth) Stage of Elmira, Terry ( Diane) Stage of Hordeheads, Lucinda ( Robert ) Evans of Big Flats, and Joycelyn ( Patrick) Bermingham of Elmira, 14 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Mr. Stage served with the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater during World War II . He also served as the Council Commissioner of the Sullivan Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America and was an Eagle Scout and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He was a life member andpast Chief of the Webbs Mills Volunteer Fire Department, a New York State Fire Service Instructor who was instrumental in the first years of the New York State Fire Academy and started the Fire Youth Resource Exchange Program ( FYRE)and served as the Chemung County Fire Coordinator from 1981 to 1991.Mr. Stage was an active member of the Pine City Baptist Church. The immediate family wants to extend their sincere thanks to the 6th floor staff at the Chemung County Nursing facility who becameHowies extended family. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave, Elmira, NY on Monday, October 16, 2006 from5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Following the visitation there will be a Firemans Memorial Service.Funeral Services honoring his life will immediately follow with Reverend Horace Stoddard officiating. Burial will be Tuesday, October 17that1 P.M. at Woodlawn Cemetery with full military honors accorded.
