March 26, 1904 — April 21, 2003

Age 99 of Elmira, NY died Monday, April 21, 2003.Born in Elmira, he resided in that city his entire life.He retired from both the American LaFrance Co. and Chemung Canal Trust Co.During his lifetime, Irving performed with the Elks Band, the Masonic Band, the Elmira Symphony Orchestra, and the Bill Butler Orchestra, playing the bassoon, the clarinet, and the oboe. He was a member of the national and local chapters of the AARP and a lifelong member of Park Church in Elmira.Preceding Irving in death were his parents, Irving Fenimore Houghtaling and Bertha Graner Houghtaling; his wife, Hazel Hedrick Houghtaling; and his twin brother, Arnold Penley Houghtaling. Survivors include his niece, Susan Houghtaling Odom, of Otto, NC; his nephew, Arnold Houghtaling, of Plymouth Meeting, PA; his wife?s nephew, Donald R. Smith and his wife, Mary, of Franklin, TN; and several cousins, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Family and friends are invited to call at The Park Church, W. Church St., Elmira, NY onSaturday, April 26, 2003 from 2:00 to 3:00 PM with Funeral and Committal services there at 3:00 PM. The Rev. John W. Gibbon will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery next to his beloved wife, Hazel. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to The Orchestra of the Finger Lakes, 92 W. Market St., Corning, NY 14830 or The Park Church, 208 W. Gray Street, Elmira, NY 14901.
