Age 87, of Fassett Road Elmira, NY died Wednesday, May 5, 2004 peacefully at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. He was born October 21, 1916 in Elmira the son of the late Conway Daniel and M. Leona Thomas. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Glenn Earl Thomas and Robert Wilbur Thomas. Jack married Elizabeth (Betty) Thomas September 8, 1945 in Whitman, MA. They have celebrated 58 wonderful years of life and love together. His survivors include: loving wife, Elizabeth; beloved children, Marc (Margo) Thomas of Reisterstown, MD; Grant Thomas of Dundee, NY; Gregg (Mar) Thomas of Newfield, NY; Cheryl Thomas (Richard) Bowie of Connelly, NY; much-loved grandchildren, Evan Thomas, Owen Thomas and Sarah Thomas; great grandchildren, Chloe Thomas and Maia Thomas; along with several nieces and nephews.Jack graduated from Southside High School in June of 1934. He received his BA in 1938 from the University of Rochester and his MD from the University of Syracuse in 1942. His 3-year residency took place at the University of Rochester ? Strong Memorial Hospital. In 1984 he retired from the Elmira Orthopedics, Inc. He was a Veteran of the US Army proudly serving his country and was honorably discharged as Major in the Medical Corps. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served respectfully as a Deacon. Jack was a 15-year member of the Elmira School Board and past president for 4 years. He was on the Board of Directors at Tanglewood Nature Center, president of the Chemung County Medical Society and was the Chief of Surgical Staff at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. The Natatorium at Elmira Free Academy was named after Jack E. Thomas. In his spare time, Jack enjoyed woodworking and loved gardening. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service to celebrate his life and honor his memory Saturday, May 8, 2004 in the First Presbyterian Church 1054 West Clinton Street at 11:00 AM.
