A friend to all and loved by many, left this earthly plane peacefully without warning on the morning of November 9th 2005 at her home on West Second St. in Elmira. Jean was born November 3rd, 1924 to Gatha and Vera Winder in Norfolk Virginia. She maintained a lifelong membership to the Norfolk Central Baptist Church and attended the First Baptist Church of Elmira over the years. Her faith and love of god was unwavering. After attending Alfred State College in 1942, she married William Bowler Day. They celebrated 62 years of marriage with their family this July. Aside from her husband she is survived by her five children: Sunnie Day Griswold of Canisteo, Mary Louise Day-Starr of Springfield Tennessee, Jackie Day of Bandon Oregon, William (Gail) Day of Bend Oregon and Elizabeth (Ed Kenny) Day of Elmira. Her nine grandchildren: Bryce, Rebecca, Darin, Matthew, Jason, Sunnie, Bodie, Emmy and Mayrose along with six great-grand children, Skylar, Jared, Tyler, Logan, Hattie and Grace. Before moving to Elmira in 1972, Jean lived in Little Genesee, NY and was employed at Hi-Q Aerovox in Olean. After moving to Elmira, she was a waitress at the EI Monte Restaurant in Fisherville for 14 years. She belonged to the Zonta Club, The Birthday Club, played Mahjongg weekly, and volunteered at the Arnot Ogden Hospital for years. She was an avid reader and a wonderful cook, as well as a toe tapping music lover who loved to dance. She was a talented artist drawing, painting, and cross stitching many beautiful pieces for her friends and family. She had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel the world. There were no strangers to her. She was a devoted wife, mother, and friend with a generous caring spirit. She loved people. Her family was precious to her and she let us know often. A woman of great strength, she lived life on her own terms. Although she lives on in our hearts, her physical presence will be dearly missed. We were not ready for her to go.The family wishes to celebrate her life by receiving friends at Olthof Funeral Home, Inc, 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. on Tuesday, November 15th from 4-6:30 PM, followed by a Service of Remembrance.
