Jennie H. Crandall, 102, passed away peacefully in her home in Pine City on 11 January 2016. Born 28 March 1913 at Little Genesee, Allegany County, NY, the daughter of Karl E. and Margaret A. (Millard) Hoxie, she was the widow of Clarence W. Crandall, who died in 1983. She is survived by her daughter, Judith C. Harbold; her son, and daughter-in-law Steven A. and Pamela J. Crandall of Pine City; and her two granddaughters and their families, Lynda and Jay Schwartz of Newtonville, MA and their children, Laura and Jack, and Karen and Peter English of Northborough, MA, and their daughters, Rachel and Nicole. She had many loved nieces and nephews. She was industrious by nature.She was a thrifty homemaker and, when her children were grown, an invaluable assistant to her husband in his water well drilling business.In her later life, she enjoyed quiet pursuits, including reading hundreds of library books and doing the daily crossword.Throughout the years, she enjoyed many types of needlecrafts, and left a legacy of knitting and crotchet projects, quilts, hooked rugs and other crafts.Her recipe for “Jennie Cake” will remain a family treasure. Gentle and optimistic, she had a core of inner strength.In her last illness, she was patient and grateful for the care she received from loving family members and professional caregivers. She remained a longtime member of the Zuleika Temple of Daughters of the Nile and of the Chemung Valley Old Timer’s Association. Family and friends are invited to gather at Olthof Funeral Home, 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, on Saturday, January 16, 12PM (noon) to 2PM, when a farewell service will be held.
