Age 88, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2013 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility following an extended illness. She was born March 10, 1925 in Blossburg, PA. Joan was the daughter of the late Francis W. Vroman and Margaret May Powell. Joan graduated from St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in April 1945 and immediately enlisted in the US Army, where she was promoted to Second Lieutenant June 4, 1945. She served at various hospitals before being discharged from active duty October 1946, after being awarded the World War II Victory Medal. Joan worked as a nurse at various locations in Pennsylvania and then returned to St. Joseph's Hospital, where she retired as an instructor in the Nursing School. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Carmen Cavuto, as well as her brother, Francis Vroman. She is survived by her dear friends, Richard and Beverly Moriarty, Susan Padgett and Joanne Skrodenis, as well as her brother Leslie Vroman, sister-in-law, Ellen Vroman, niece, Sheri Vroman Rainear and nephew, Scott Vroman. A special thanks to Melanie Lowman and the other nurses and staff on the 6thfloor at CCNF for the wonderful care that Joan received. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira/Southport, NY. Burial will take place in the Arbon Cemetery Blossburg, PA at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 31st. Friends and family will provide flowers.
