John R. Bailey

Owner/ Proprietor of Hudson Shoe Co. Elmira, and Corning, NY.Age 74 of West Elmira, NY. Passed away on Wednesday, January 3rd, 2008 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira. John was born October 8, 1933, the son of Charles R. and Ruth M. Bailey of Elmira. John graduated from Southside High School class of 1952 and attended Bucknell University. He is served in the United States Army for 2 years. Stationed in Ulm, Germany. John returned home to manage the family business, as President of Hudson Shoe Co. of Elmira, NY. John later founded and was President of Hudson Shoe Co. of Corning, NY retiring in 1989. In his retirement, he stayed activeoperating a small business, Bailey Paint and Construction. An avid sportsman all his life, hunting, and fishing was the passion of his life. A beloved spot for John was his Keuka Lake home where he summered with his family for over 40 years. His other beloved spot was Sanibel Island, Florida where for over 30 years he vacationed enjoyed fishing and Shelling, and many special times with family and Sanibel friends. John was lifelong member of Christ United Methodist Church in Elmira, NY where he and his wife, Phyllis where married on March 1st, 1958. John is survived by Phyllis Bailey, His wife of 50 years and beloved children Pamela (James) Sullivan of Portsmouth, NH, Dr. Jeffrey (Dawn) Bailey of Mentor, OH, Brenda (Philip) Scinto of Mentor, OH, Bonnisue (Timothy) Angulas of Mont Vernon, NH, and Brett Bailey of Williamsburg, VA, Grandchildren, Erin, Caitlin and Sean Sullivan; Ian and Jenna Bailey; Hanna and Sara Scinto; Madison, Grace and Jake Angulas.John is also survived by sister, Beverly Pierce of Whitney Point, NY and brother Richard C. Bailey of Columbia, SC and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, NY on Sunday, January 6th, 2008 from 4:00PM to 7:00PM. Funeral services will be held at the New Beginnings Church (Christ United Methodist Church) 330 Church Street, Elmira, NY, Monday, January 7th, 2008 at 11:00AM. The Reverend Joseph Kim will officiate. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, NY. Those wishing may make memorial donations to the charity of their choice.
