John M. Murphy,

October 17, 1936 — January 29, 2007

Was born October 17, 1936 in Elmira, NY the son of the late Frances and Katherine (Kole) Murphy passed away peacefully on Monday, January 29, 2007 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center after a lengthy illness. John was raised and educated in Elmira Heights and graduated from Thomas A. Edison High School in 1955. He attended Corning Community College. He served 4 years in the United States Marine Corps and 2 years in the US Marine Reserves. He worked for many years through the Laborers Local Union for various construction companies. In 2000, he retired from the New York State Department of Corrections at Groveland Correction facility with 15 dedicated years of service as an officer. John was predeceased by his best friend and loving wife, Kathryn (Mashanic) Murphy in 2005. He is survived by his sons, John M. Murphy II of South Bend, Indiana; Patrick (Sondra) Murphy of Dansville, NY; daughter, Stacy Murphy (Jonathan Evans) of Millport, NY; brother, Joseph (Mary Margaret) Murphy of Elmira, NY; sisters, Mary (Joe) Calabucci of Penn Yan, NY and Ponce Inlet, FL; Sheila Murphy of Cathedral City, CA; along with 9 grandchildren, 1 great grandson, several nieces, nephews and his dog, Jet. In Johns active years he had a passion for outdoors sporting such as hunting, fishing, trapping, farming, gardening and training his German Shorthair dogs for Field Trail competition. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira, NY 14904 on Friday, February 2, 2007 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral services honoring his life will be celebrated following the visitation at 8 PM. The Reverend Robert MacNamara will officiate followed by Military Honors. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to the following charities that personally touched his family: American Diabetes Association, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Muscular Dystrophy Association, envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
