JOHN DEWAYNE NOONAN WW II Veteran Was born December 29, 1920 in Elmira, NY the son of the late Laffette and Jeanette (Winkle) Moseson, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 13, 2008 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center at the age of 87. John was a faithful communicant of the former St. Cecilia's Church and most recently St. Peter & Paul's Church. After twenty years in the restaurant business, John went to work for an international insurance company where he became a manager and a teacher in Albany and Chicago. He retired from Combined Life Insurance after 21 years of dedicated service. John was very involved in Veteran's organizations. He was the past Commander of S/Sgt. Jack Swan Disabled American Chapter # 13, past Commander of the Rex Field Post # 901 Veterans of Foreign Wars, past Seam Squirrel (commander) of the Military Order of The Cootie Pup Tent # 35 (an honorary unit of the V.F.W.), past Commander of the Harry B. Bentley Post # 443 of the American Legion and past Commander of the Chemung County Veteran's Council. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie # 941. While serving proudly in the Army from 1942 to 1946, John received the prestigious Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and was also the recipient of the Conspicuous Service Cross. He also received the following medals while serving his country: the American Service Medal, European African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the WW II Victory Medal. He recently was presented a plaque from the American Legion for his honorary service during WW II. John won many awards for ballroom dancing and loved music. He was a boxer, loved tennis and was very fond of sports cars. He loved all animals especially his "grandchildren", Deb's dogs. He also enjoyed playing shuffleboard, pool and darts. Above all else, he loved ice cream with his favorite being peanut butter cup. He never said a bad word about anyone and had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be missed but never forgotten. John is survived by his loving daughter, Deborah J. Noonan, RN and her husband Mark Williams who reside in Ithaca, NY; nephews, John and Jim Gray; niece, Barbara Woodard and children; along with 5 step-children and many step-grandchildren especially, Maurisa, Kristofer, Philecia and Philip Jr. (PJ); his very best friend and 11 year partner, Hazel Foster. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira, NY on Saturday, October 18, 2008 from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. Funeral services honoring his life will be held there at 5:30 PM. The Reverend Walter Wainwright will celebrate John's services. Interment will take place on Monday, October 20, 2008 at 10:00 AM in St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery Elmira, NY where the Chemung County Veteran's Honor Squad, of which John was a proud member, will accord Mr. Noonan military honors. Memorial donations may be directed to the Falck Cancer Center or to the SPCA. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.LODGE NOTICESOfficers and members of the Rex Field V.F.W.
