January 11, 1912 — December 24, 2008

LOLA C.SMITH Formerly of Pine City, NY Age 96, of Bethany Manor, Horseheads, NY passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Lola was the daughter of the late Olin N. and Leslie (Early) Chamberlin and was born January 11, 1912 in Columbia Cross Roads, PA. She is the beloved wife of Cecil J. Smith who predeceased her in 1967. Lola is survived by her loving family: daughters and son-in-laws, Phyllis and John Sterling of Pine City, NY; Janice and Earl Strope of Elmira, NY; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Marie Smith of Pine City, NY; along with 27 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, 15 great great grandchildren and was a grandmother to many others as well. She is also survived by: brothers, Burdett (Dorothy) Chamberlin of Lawrenceville, PA; Glenn (Barbara) Chamberlin of Elmira, NY; sister-in-laws, Edna "Richie" Chamberlin of Mainesburg, PA; Lillian Chamberlin of Florida; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Lola was preceded in death by her loving husband, Cecil; son, Donald L. Smith; grandson, Donald C. Smith; brothers, Olin Lee Chamberlin, Walter Chamberlin and LaVerne Chamberlin; step-brother, Edward Andrews; sister, Nina Puryear. Since 1951, Lola was a furniture upholsterer and her work is still enjoyed by many area businesses. At the age of 90, she temporarily retired but still continued to sew. In 2003, Lola moved to Bethany Courtyards so she could enjoy the friendship and company of others. She greatly enjoyed and loved being around other people. Lola felt very comfortable as a resident at the Courtyards, and received the utmost love and care. She was known to many as "Gram". Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira/Southport, NY on Saturday, December 27, 2008 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. Funeral services honoring her life will follow the visitation at 5 PM. The Reverend Beth Bouwens will celebrate Lola's services. Interment will take place at the convenience of her family in the Jobs Corners Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to the Caton United Methodist Church.
