Of Bethany Village Horseheads, formerly of Elmira, NY passed away on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, 2007, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in her 104th year. Honoring her wishes, there are no prior calling hours. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of her family. Interment will be in the Howland family plot in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Dr. R. Scott Howland Award Fund at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center, or the Tanglewood Nature Center, 443 Coleman Ave. Elmira, NY 14903. Louisa was predeceased by her husband, R. Scott Howland, M.D.; her parents and siblings; and Godson, Jon Dieter Murphy. She is survived by her loving family: son and daughter-in-law, Reeve B. and Karin Peterson Howland of Elmira, NY; grandson R. Scott Howland II (Jennifer B.) of Steamboat Springs, CO; with great granddaughter, Ella Louisa; grandson, Peter G. Howland (Margaret M.) of Carlisle, PA; with great grandsons, Timothy and Benjamin; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Howland Holmes of Orchard Park, NY; niece and nephews, Alice R. Holmes, Clinton H. Holmes and Ross H. Holmes and their families; also niece, Luise Hanschen Moller; and nephew, Karl Hanschen and their families in Germany. Mrs. Howland emigrated from her childhood farm in Fickmuhlen, Germany to New York City in 1925. She graduated from the School of Nursing at Lenox Hill Hospital, and served as an operating room nurse at the hospital until settling in Elmira with her husband. Mrs. Howland volunteered her services at the Arnot Ogden School of Nursing in various roles during the middle of the 20th century. Louisas youth on the farm provided her with an acute interest and concern for nature, birds and wild animals, and her experience as a nurse instilled in her a great sense of care and compassion for people in need. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend and will be fondly remembered by all who had the good fortune to know her.
