Margaret C. Bennett

Margaret (Calhoun) Bennett Peggie, age 97, was born in Johnstown, PA in July of 1919 to John Wharton and Margaret Myra (Foster) Calhoun. She passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 1, 2017 at the Elcor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Horseheads. Her husband, Walter E. Bennett; son, Douglas Christian Bennett; grandson, Michael J. Bennett; sister, Virginia Smith; and brother, John F. Calhoun predeceased her. Surviving are son, John W. (Carolyn) Bennett; grandson, Matthew C. (Susan) Bennett; brother, Robert B. (Joyce) Calhoun; brother-in-law, Donald G. (Joanne) Bennett; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Peggie graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and SUNY Geneseo, Class of 1965, with a Masters Degree in Library Science. For many years she was elementary librarian for the Ridge Road, Gardner Road and Broad Street schools and coordinator of Library Services for the Horseheads School District. She retired in 1982. After her retirement, Peggie volunteered for over 20 years with the Horseheads Free Library and the Elmira School District. She enjoyed traveling during retirement, visiting Alaska, the Caribbean, France, England, Russia, Portugal and Spain. She was a member of the Scottish American Society and Daughters of the Nile, an organization which helps provide free medical assistance to children through the Shriner's Hospital. Her favorite pastimes were reading, crossword puzzles, camping and canoeing. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira/Southport on Saturday, January 7, 2017 from 12:00 to 3:00 pm. A time of reflection and memories will follow the visitation at 3:00 pm. Interment will take place at the convenience of her family in the Pomfret Manor Cemetery in Sunbury, PA where Peggie will be laid to rest with her beloved Walter. Contributions in Peggie's memory may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children Processing Center, PO Box 1510, Ranson, WV 25438.
