Age 99, formerly of the Southside of Elmira, NY, passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2003 at The Homestead, Soldiers and Sailors Hospital in Penn Yan. Margaret was a lifelong resident of Elmira; a descendent of the Hammond/Knapp family, who were original settlers of Elmira. She was born on Lower Maple Avenue, July 31, 1903, the daughter of Fletcher and Mary Knapp Mathews. Margaret is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters; Frances Mathews and Grace Tuthill, brothers; Guy Mathews and Hammond Mathews. Margaret attended School #7, a one-room schoolhouse on Lower Maple Ave., and graduated from Elmira Free Academy. Margaret worked for 40 years as a private secretary for service managers with American LaFrance. She was a member of the National Secretary?s Association, the Elmira Garden Club, and the Riverside United Methodist Church. Family and friends are invited to call at Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira on Saturday, January 18, 2003 from 2:00 to 3:00 PM with Funeral and Committal there at 3:00 PM. The Reverend M. Mari Rockwell will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
