: Age 98, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, September 8, 2003 at Bethany Manor where she was residing. She was born March 12, 1905 in Waverly, NY the daughter of the late Benjamin and Nellie (Cooper) Haggerty. On November 19, 1941 she married Ralph W. Sweeny who preceded her in death in 1984. Her stepfather, Elmer Hull, also predeceased her. Marie taught First Grade in the Elmira City School District for thirty-nine years until her retirement in 1965. She became a member of the Southside Baptist Church on April 19, 1920 and has faithfully served there for 83 years. She was a life member of the National Education Association/New York Teachers Association, and the Geneseo Alumni Association, along with the following organizations: the National Retired Teachers Association, life member of the Elmira Garden Club and the Empire State Gladiolus Society, the Chemung County Historical Society and the Thursday morning Musicals. She is survived by several cousins, two first cousins: Phyllis (Ray) Niebes of South Euclid, OH; Judson (Nancy) Cooper of Madison, OH; caretaker, Linda (Bob) Palmer, of Pine Valley, NY; nephew, Eldred (Pearl) Peck of Walpole, NH; niece, Dorothy (Harold) Shephard of Freeville, NY; along with special friends, Winifred Spence of Elmira, NY; Mary and Paul Fox of Tucson, AZ; Margaret Kowalski of Horseheads, NY; Laura and George Mysnyk of Vestal, NY; Marjorie Shaff, Betty Howe of Elmira, NY and many, many more too numerous to mention. Marie was dearly loved by all who knew her including former pupils, many of whom still kept in touch with her through notes, visits, phone calls and gifts. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira, NY on Saturday, September 13, 2003 from 2 to 4 PM. Funeral Services will be held there at the conclusion of the calling hours. (4:00 PM) Reverend Jack Myers will officiate. Interment will take place in the Tioga Point Cemetery Athens, PA at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations in the name of Marie H.
