Age 81, of Pine City, NY passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2004 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility.He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Anna ?Jane? Cherkis; daughters, Betty A. Carey and Mary Jane (Steve) Stickler; son, Michael J. (Mary) Cherkis; 5 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; sister, Mary Buckholtz. Nicholas was predeceased by his parents; Nicholas Sr. and Anastasia Cherkis; brother, Peter Cherkis; sisters, Annie Cherkis and Katherine Cleary; son-in-law, David Carey.He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed feeding his pet squirrels, and kept a meticulous garden. Nick was a United States Army Veteran of World War II, and a former employee of the Remington Rand and the American LaFrance.Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira on Thursday, July 15, 2004 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, with funeral and committal services there at the conclusion of calling hours (8:00 PM).Father Pat Connor will officiate.Interment will be in St. Peter & Paul?s Cemetery at the convenience of the family.Those wishing may make memorials to the Chemung County Nursing Facility Activity Fund, 103 Washington Street, Elmira, NY 14901 in Nick?s name.A ?Candle of Remembrance? may be left for the family at www.olthof.com.
