Was born November 7, 1917 in Gillett, the son of the late Jay and Iva (Lewis) Harkness passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at the Troy Community Hospital at the age of 93. He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-laws, Donald and Betty Lou of Gillett; Greg and Diane of Sarasota, FL; Matthew and Lynda of Gillett; grandchildren, Ian Harkness, Lydia Harkness (Shawn Cranmer), Tiffany (Ivan) Morales, Katie Harkness, Nicole Harkness, Elizabeth (Todd) Johnson, Emily (Jason) Kenyon, Axel Greene; great grandchildren, Mia Morales, Hunter Kenyon and Caroline Johnson; along with several nieces and nephews. Norman was predeceased by his loving wife, Shirley (Holcomb) Harkness in 1995, brothers, Elwin, Dana and Merton; sisters, Shirley Packard and Rosamond Tillinghast. Norman was a Veteran of the US Army proudly serving his country from 1941 - 1945 in the European Theatre during WW II. He was a member of the Masonic Trojan Lodge # 306 in Troy, PA, a lifetime member of the VFW Post # 5655 in Gillett, PA and a member of the Gillett Baptist Church. Norman owned and operated Harkness Construction for many years. He was an avid golfer and bowler and enjoyed working with wood. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira/Southport, NY on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Funeral services honoring his life will follow the visitation at 7 PM. The Reverend Allen Goss will celebrate Norman's service. Interment will take place privately at the convenience of his family in the Gillett Cemetery where he will be laid to rest with his beloved Shirley.
