Phyllis C. Bailey age 75 of Mentor, OH for the past 2 years, formerly of Elmira, NY, died Wednesday December 7, 2011 at Hospice House in Cleveland, OH, surrounded by her family. She was born February 14, 1936 in Elmira, NY daughter of Leslie and Mamie Clark. Phyllis was a homemaker and teacher. She graduated from Southside High School in Elmira, NY Class of 1953 and Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics in 1957. She was a member and officer of Pi Beta Phi Sorority at Cornell and a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Elmira, NY where she married John R. Bailey March 1, 1958. Phyllis dedicated her life to the education of her five children and ten grandchildren and privately tutored many students through courses and exams helping them to reach their educational goals. Phyllis was passionate about American politics, history, and current events and cooking. She could often be found with her NY Times, the latest political “thriller” and the newest cookbook, earmarked with a grocery list, next to her chair. Phyllis is survived by her children: Pamela B. (James) Sullivan of South Hampton, NH, Jeffrey C. (Dawn) Bailey DDS of Mentor, OH, Brenda B. (Philip) Scinto of Mentor, OH, Bonnisue C. (Timothy) Angulas of Mont Vernon, NH and Brett J. Bailey of Williamsburg, VA, grandchildren: Erin Sullivan and fiancé Todd Gonzales, Caitlin and Sean Sullivan, Ian and Jenna Bailey, Hanna and Sara Scinto, Madison, Grace and Jake Angulas. Also survived by sister-in-law, Beverly Pierce of Whitney Point, NY; brother-in-law, C. Richard Bailey of Columbia, SC; many nieces and nephews and close friend Claudia Bailey of Myrtle Beach, SC. Preceding Phyllis in death is her husband of 50 years: John R. Bailey and parents: Leslie and Mamie Clark. The family will receive friends Saturday December 17, 2011 from 10-11 am at Olthof Funeral Home 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira, NY. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, NY. Contributions can be made to the John R. Bailey Memorial Fund, Tanglewood Nature Center, 443 Coleman Ave. Elmira, NY 14903.
