Age 72 of Elmira and Horseheads, NY, passed away at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, Pa., Monday, September 20, 2004.Dick was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Leonore Sheeley Underwood and sister, Elinor Underwood Rose. Dick is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sharon; children, Tom (Margo) Underwood; Susan (Joseph) LaVelle; Sandy DiCinti; Julie (Rick) Ringer; grandchildren, Jessica, Nick, J.J., and Erin; great-grandchildren, Hayley and Erick; sisters, Mary (Casimir) Krolak and Nancy (Richard) Lynch; many niecesand nephews; and his Exchange Student daughter, Dr. Noemi Perez. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, NY on Thursday, September 23rd, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral services will be held at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 304 North Main Street, Elmira, NY on Friday at 11 am. The Reverend William Lutz will officiate. Graveside committal prayers will be shared at the Woodlawn National Cemetery with full Military Honors accorded by the Chemung County Honors Squad. Dick was a graduate of the Southside High School Class of 1950. He was an honorably discharged Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving from 1951 to 1955 aboard the Destroyer USS Neu DDE 818. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he graduated from Elmira College. Dick retired from Westinghouse and I.S.T. as engineer and manager of Nuclear and Manufacturing.He traveled extensively all over the world. He loved his family and friends; golfing with his friends, his poker group,Mall walker friends, and the Westinghouse Lunch Group. Dick was very proud of his memberships in the HAM Radio Assoc. and the Emergency Management Office of Civil Defense, the Elmira Heights American Legion Post# 154, and B.P.O.E. Horseheads Elks Club # 2297. Memorials in Dick?s name maybe made to the American Diabetes Assoc., NYS Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 31160, Hartford, CT 06150-1160 or the Trinity Episcopal Church, 304 North Main Street, Elmira, NY 14901.
