Age 82, of Ft. Myers, FL, formerly of Elmira, NY, passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2006. Born in Bergen, NY to parents, Lyall and Dorothy (Glitch) Evans. His family moved to Syracuse, NY in 1934. He graduated from Onondaga Valley Academy in 1942, and attended college in Ft. Hayes, Kansas. He was predeceased by his parents, Lyall and Dorothy; sisters, Margaret Westman and Martha Case of Syracuse.He is survived by his loving wife, Betty (Field) Evans of Ft. Myers, FL; daughter, Judith (Charles) Brinkerhoff of Pine City, NY, grandsons, Jeffrey Brinkerhoff, wife Wendy and children Michelle, Tyler, Morgan of Auburn, NY, Jason Brinkerhoff and Kathy Taylor of Pine City, NY, and sister, Josephine Latimer of Syracuse, NY; many nieces, nephews, relatives, and many close friends.Richard entered the United States Army in December 1942. Fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was taken POW. He escaped with some important documents and received the Bronze Star.He was the initial founder of Elmira Heat Treating, Inc., Elmira Grinding Works, Elmira, NY, Evans Heat Treating in Syracuse, NY. He retired as CEO in 1982 from Elmira Heat Treating, Inc. Former President and lifetime member of Fur, Fin, and Feathers, Inc., former member of Corning Country Club, Elmira City Club, Sarasota Gun Club, Past Chairman of America Society of Metals, Member EAA flying society and Pinelakes Country Club Ft. Myers, FL. Richard enjoyed skeet and trap shooting, golfing, boating, fishing, reading and flying his own plane.He loved flying his float plane with his buddies to many Canadian fishing trips.Richard built his own Acro Sport 2 bi-plane which he was very proud of.Richard was especially proud of his grandsons with whom he spent many happy times.A memorial service will be held at Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, NY on Saturday, April 1, 2006 at 12 noon. Pastor Chris Curry will officiate.Interment will be in Woodlawn National Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make a donation in Richard?s memory to the St. Jude?s Children?s Research Hospital, 505 N.
