Was born August 5, 1923 in Elmira, NY the son of the late William Campbell and Harriett (King) Hyde.Passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at 89. His loving wife, Virginia (Taylor) Hyde predeceased him on July 27, 2003. His sister, Dorothy Barton also preceded him in death. He is survived by his sons, Robert T. Hyde (Beth Ann); William C. Hyde (Jamy); daughters, Susan Hyde-Spain (Michael); Pamela Battisti (James); along with 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Robert was Veteran of the US Army proudly serving his country from 1943 to 1946 during WW II. He was a member of the 30th Infantry Division, was involved in the liberation of the Philippines, Manila, Korea and with the occupation of Japan. He served with dignity and honor. Robert retired from the New York State Telephone Company after 40 years of dedicated service. He was a member of the NY Telephone Pioneers, CWA Local # 1111 and a member of the American Legion Bentley Trumball Post # 442 Horseheads, NY.He was a faithful member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and former Deacon as well. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira/Southport, NY on Friday, January 4, 2013 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. A Memorial Service celebrating his life and honoring his memory will follow the visitation at 1 PM. The Reverend Jane Winters will officiate. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn National Cemetery where the Chemung County Veterans Honor Squad will accord Mr. Hyde military honors. Memorial donations may be directed to the Chemung County Humane Society & SPCA. Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home.
