Age 85, of Elmira, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 6, 2011.Bob was born in Buffalo, NY on Sunday, August 30, 1925, the son of Josephine and Felix Prochnow.He is survived by his beloved wife and companion of 62 years, Iris Prochnow.Together they raised two children, Linda (Jerry) Haley of Montour Falls, NY and Robert Prochnow of Bronx, NY.Bob and Iris have two grandchildren, David Haley of Irvine, CA and Eleanor (Chris) Quenault of Mission Viejo, CA, and great-grandson, Christopher Quenault.After graduating from Bennett High School in Buffalo, Bob joined the US Navy. A Lieutenant at discharge from active duty, Bob continued to serve in the Naval Reserves.He graduated from the University of Rochester with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked in the engineering field throughout his life.Bob worked for Hardinge, Inc. until his retirement in 1988.The last decade of his work there included research and development in techniques and materials to improve the precision of Hardinge machine tools worldwide.He served on the Hardinge Foundation Board of Directors for many years thereafter.Bob was a championship sailor, and he and Iris were active members of the Buffalo Yacht Club. Bob captured many trophies during his racing years, including the Commodore's Cup in 1941 at age 16.Bob and his young family moved to Elmira in 1956 where he continued sailing on Keuka Lake for over 50 years.Active in the community, Bob was a member of The Park Church and the Elmira Rotary Club. Along with Mayor Edward A. Mooers, Bob helped to start Capabilities.He was a member of the Humane Society Board of Directors and was elected to the Elmira Water Board for many years.Along with his wife, Iris, Bob enjoyed skiing at Greek Peak.Bob was a master craftsman and woodworker who created half-models and restored several antique wooden boats.The family is deeply grateful for the outstanding care Bob received through Southern Tier Hospice.In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the charity of your choice.Memorial services through Olthof Funeral Home will be announced by the family at a later date.A' Candle of Remembrance' may be left for his family in obituaries at www. olthof.com
