Vern W. Wood

Loving husband and father, went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 24, 2007 at the Bath VA, at age 83. Vern was born in Elmira, NY, the son of the late Meryle and Vera (Tong) Wood. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Frances (Terese) Wood; a son, Vern W. (Dawn) Wood Jr. of Arizona; two daughters, Sherlyn Wood of Horseheads, and Robin R. ( John) Wikoff of Oregon;five grandchildren, Vern W. Wood III, Timothy Wood, Shannon, Jamie and Jarrett Wikoff; numerous great grandchildren; and one brother, Howard ( Dawn) Wood of Hammondsport.Besides his parents, Mr. Wood was preceded in death by a son, Gary Michael Wood; two brothers, Meryle Wood Jr. and Cleon Wood Sr.; and one sister, Rebecca Holenbeck. Mr. Wood was a 100% disabled veteran of the third army having served under General Patton during the Battle of The Bulge and also participated in the Normandy Invasion. Vern refinished wood products and enjoyed hunting.Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave, Elmira on Sunday, September 30th from 2-4 and 6-8 PM and again on Monday from 6-8 PM with a funeral service to follow at 8 PM with the Reverend Mark Dieterle and Reverend Paul Mather officiating.
