William Harold Appleby Age 88, was born November 6, 1928 in Wellsboro, PA, the son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Pearl Lucy (Ripley) Appleby. He passed away peacefully on Monday, April 3, 2017 at Bethany Manor with family at his bedside. His loving wife of 46 years, Mary Ellen (Bergren) Appleby preceded him in death August 4, 2002. His brother, Vincent Appleby; sister, Ruth Brooks; brothers, Richard (Ellen) Hackett and Ernie Hackett also predeceased him. He is survived by his loving son and daughter-in-law, Daniel W. and Jill Appleby of Ovid, NY; beloved grandchildren, Anna, Ellen and Simon Appleby, also of Ovid, NY; brother, Robert (Faith) Appleby of Pine City, NY; sister, Joyce (John) Messino of Big Flats, NY; along with several nieces and nephews. Bill was a veteran of the US Army, proudly serving his country during the Korean War. Although he was a carpenter by trade, Bill was a painter from 1972 until his retirement in 1986 with the Chemung County Building and Grounds. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira/Southport, NY on Friday, April 7, 2017 from 12:00 to 1:00PM. A Funeral Service celebrating William's life will follow the visitation at 1:00PM. Lay Pastor John P. Knapp will officiate. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Horseheads, NY, where he will be laid to rest with his beloved wife, Mary.
