William Arthur Simkin

March 4, 1911 — November 22, 2001

Simkin, William Arthur, Jr. Age 90, of Elmira, NY passed away Thursday, November 22, 2001 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Bath, NY. Born in Wellsville, NY the tenth of eleven children of William and Mary Church Simkin. He moved with his family to a farm in Christian Hollow in the Elmira area in 1913. Bill graduated from the Southside High School, Washington Missionary College in 1933, Pacific Union College in 1937, Buffalo General Hospital and Walter Reed Hospital where he studied Medical Technology. He worked at the Arnot Ogden Hospital as a medical technologist for 29 years before his retirement in 1976. He substituted in the Elmira City School District, mostly in the fields of Science and Mathematics. He was a member of the Elmira Seventh-day Adventist Church. He was a Master Guide, served as a deacon, an elder and in the Youth departments at his church. Bill served in the army in the Philippines on the island of Leyte during World War II. He was spared the sinking of the Dorchester by going west to the Philippines on the Sea Witch, returning on the Bon Homme Richard. He was predeceased by his wife, Alice Trimm Simkin in 1978; Brothers and Sisters, Edith Knapp, Ava Simkin, Mary Simkin, Clara Dwyer, Julia Parker, Leon Simkin, Alice Fuller, Glen Simkin and Ruth Gallo. Surviving are; Son and daughter-in-law, Lauren and Colleen Simkin of Erin, NY; Daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and James Reynolds of Elmira, NY; Grandchildren, Brian Simkin of Erin, Laurie Simkin of Erin, LCpl Timothy Reynolds, USMC, Camp Lejeune, NC; Airman David Reynolds, USAF, Sheppard AFB, TX and Rebekah Reynolds of Elmira. One great-granddaughter, Amber Simkin of Moscow, PA. Brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Eleanor Simkin of Elmira; Nieces and Nephews, Eloise and Ward Hill, Robert and Phyllis Parker, William and Lorraine Parker, Malcolm and Hilda Dwyer, Shirley and Wilfred Bradt. Many friends and church family. Family and friends are invited to call Sunday, November 25, 2001 from 2 to 4 PM at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira. The funeral and committal services will be held there at the conclusion of calling hours at 4 PM with Mr. Earle Stewart officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be directed to: The Seventh-day Adventist Church, 813 Maple Ave., Elmira, NY 19404 or to: American Cancer Society, P.O.
